Creating Custom-Shaped Bokeh Lights Using AKVIS Refocus AI
Bokeh comes from the Japanese word "boke", which means "blur" or "haze." This aesthetically pleasing effect is used to make the foreground sharp and the background blurred. Bokeh photography is naturally captured using high-end cameras with wide aperture lenses. The object should be so far outside the depth of field that all detail disappears and they basically become fuzzy blobs of color. If there are any lights in the background, they will turn into glowing bokeh spots.
Using the multi-purpose AKVIS Refocus AI software, you can easily apply stunning blur effects to any photo and even experiment with the bokeh spot settings. Bring festive bokeh lights to your shots!
- Step 1. Launch AKVIS Refocus AI. Open the source image using the
button or by dragging it into the Program Window.
Bokeh lights are often most visible around small background highlights. For the best result, it is recommended to use images containing artificial light sources – an example can be garland lights or the lights of a city skyline.

- Step 2. Select the Tilt-Shift mode. You can also use the Iris Blur mode: consider which one best suits the shape of the object that should remain in focus.
Tilt-Shift Mode - Step 3. Switch from Fast Preview to Full Processing to see the processed image in original quality. You can also temporarily disable the Blur Area tool
by clicking it to see the result without auxiliary markers.
Fully Processed Image - Step 4. You can stop at this point or continue to experiment with the bokeh light settings. You can choose another bokeh shape, adjust its rotation angle, add more brightness and saturation to bokeh spots. Here are the parameter values we chose:
